Regulation ECE104 Markings

  • Regulation ECE104 Markings

Since July 2011, Regulation ECE 104 has required that all newly registered heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and trailers over 3.5 tonnes have retro-reflective conspicuity markings that clearly outline the rear and sides of the vehicle to increase its visibility. Regulation ECE 104 also specifies the standard for the retro-reflective materials used, and where it must be positioned on the vehicle or trailer.

But even prior to Regulation ECE 104, fleet managers commonly utilised retro-reflective markings on vehicles because of the multiple, invaluable benefits they bring, primarily helping to prevent accidents, thus saving lives. Other additional benefits include reducing vehicle downtime and repairs, protecting employees on the road and in the depot and finally, presenting a more professional image to customers.

3M offers a range of homologated retro-reflective marking tapes that carry the compulsory E-mark and meet all the requirements of Regulation ECE 104. All 3M marking tapes are classified as Class-C, meaning they are the brightest markings permitted. They are easy to apply, resistant to peeling and other damage, and retain brightness and colour even in the harshest working conditions.

While it is not possible to identify the specific cause of the collision, it is clear that was very dark when the accident took place.

“The drivers really like the reflective markings; especially the visibility of the rear red box that makes the vehicle stand out from such a long distance on the road. The side stripes are equally important when confronted with a lorry that is turning or pulling out from a junction."
