Just like our Graduate Programme, 3M’s Industrial Placement programme offers plenty of opportunities for people to learn and grow, something that is vital for our future success, and yours.
We understand that you will want to get as much out of this placement year as you can and we ensure that you are given ample opportunity to do so. We can also empathise that work is a daunting prospect for students, but our relaxed working environment will help you settle into the organsiation and have you feeling like a regular 3Mer in no time at all!

In your first month with us you’ll gain a greater insight into 3M – what we do and how we do it. You’ll discover, first hand, the impact 3M has on everyday life and begin to find you feet within the organisation. You’ll receive some basic skills training, experience the plethora of social events on offer and get involved with any sports clubs you wish. When you’re more familiar with the organisations and the work your role requires, you’ll partake in a series of workshops such as presentation skills training and negotiation skills training. Not only will you acquire these broadly applicable skills, It’s likely that you’ll also receive specific functional training relevant to your job, depending on the area in which you’re working.

Typically, placement students take over a role from previous placement students, so you’ll normally work alongside these individuals for a one or two-week ‘hand-over’, where you’ll gain vital information about the role. Obviously you’ll receive support and coaching from your line manager throughout your 12 months but you’ll also have the option of a mentor to guide you through your placement.
