Frequently Asked Questions
Will my wound heal?
The vast majority
of wounds will heal although it must be acknowledged that some won't. By listening
and adhering to the advice and guidance of the healthcare professionals managing
your care, you will aid the healing process and give your wound the
best possible chance of healing. If your wound is one that is difficult or
unlikely to heal, the healthcare professional looking after you will inform
you of the reason why.
What type of treatment will be used on my wound?
There are many different treatments for many different wound types. The doctor or nurse who is prescribing the treatment for your wound is trained to assess your wound, medical needs and prescribe the most effective treatment options. If you have any questions or concerns please raise these with your doctor or nurse.
What can/can’t I do while living with my wound?
The most important thing is to listen and act upon the advice of the health care professionals involved with your care. If you are advised to take regular gentle exercise, change your seating or lying position regularly or raise your legs whilst seating please take notice. This advice is very important and will have a positive impact on wound healing. Nutrition is also key to helping your wound to heal, so regular drinks and a healthy balanced diet will also help.
Do not attempt to implement any of your own treatments or remedies suggested by your family and friends into your care. If you have any concerns or questions about your treatment please ask your doctor or nurse.
How often do I need to see a doctor/nurse?
The doctor and nursing team managing your care will make regular appointments or calls to see you and will assess how often you need to be seen. It is not usual these days to require daily wound dressing changes. If your wound deteriorates between appointments or visits, please call the doctor or nurse managing your care.
Are there alternative treatments if the one I am using doesn’t suit me?
If you feel the treatment you are receiving does not suit you for any reason, please discuss this with your doctor or nurse. They will be able to deal with the problem and maybe able to prescribe an alternative treatment for your wound that will not compromise your healing potential.
