When leading specialist underwriters Canopius Services Ltd moved into three floors within the Lloyd’s Building, a well known landmark in the City of London, it needed a structured cabling system with a faster bandwidth.

Canopius called in the services of network/cabling specialists Computer Networking and Cabling (CNC) Ltd to install 1,634 structured cabling outlets to handle ‘to the desk’ voice and data services. Using a Volition structured cabling system from 3M enabled the costs and time associated with the project to be reduced, as well as providing users with 1Gbps of data delivery.

CNC recommended upgrading from the Category 5 cabling used in Canopius’ previous office to Category 6 copper cabling for the new office space as this supports higher data transfer rates, increasing the output to both the desktop and central servers.

“I have every confidence that the networks we install using the 3M range of products will always be first class, said CNC managing director Fred Rossington. “One of the key benefits the product affords is that once a cable has been prepared, making a connection is tool-less and this makes for much easier installation. The other important thing from the installer’s perspective is that when using 3M products rather than other brands, our fault rate is lower. That means that the overall cost of the job to the customer is substantially reduced.”

Canopius’ Infrastructure and Support manager, Brent Gebbie, said that overall they have been very pleased with the results of the installation and that the upgrade to Category 6 has enabled them to meet their objective of accommodating more users.

Said Brent: “The new system affords better throughput and delivery to the desktop and has given us a more resilient system. Category 6 is able to take faster bandwidth and is more resistant to interference, all of which has given us the ability to be more efficient.”
