What should you look for when choosing a harness?

Some elements to take into account when choosing a safety harness

    • LANYARD KEEPERS

      1. LANYARD KEEPERS

A lanyard keeper provides a place to store the lanyard when not in use. It prevents tripping and tangling to reinforce safety.

    • Harness impact indicator

      2. WEBBING

The webbing, essential for the durability and safety of the harness, must be strong enough to withstand abrupt use and exposure to the elements without breaking or wearing out. Special applications, such as welding, require Nomex®/Kevlar®, which offers resistance to high temperatures.

    • Quick release harness buckle

      3. ADJUSTING POINTS

Whether you wear a harness for 4 hours a day or for 14 hours, it must be adjusted correctly for safety and comfort. Harnesses with adjustment points on the legs, waist (belt models), chest and torso provide a better fit.

    • how to adjust straps in fall arrest harnesses

      4. LEG STRAPS

Depending on preferences, there are different options for leg straps:

      • Pass-Through Buckle
      • Quick-Connect Buckles
    • anti-trauma harness straps for fall arrest harnesses

      5. SUSPENSION RELIEF STRAPS

In the event of a fall, these straps can be released to form a loop which the worker can stand on to reduce the pressure on the legs.

    • pelvis of fall arrest harnesses

      6. PELVIC SUPPORT

A sub-pelvic tether strap provides more support, safety and comfort for the wearer. Properly positioned, it better distributes forces during a fall.

    • Harness back connection 3m

      7. DORSAL CONNECTION

The main fall arrest point is located on the back, between the shoulder blades. All of our harnesses include a dorsal attachment point.

    • label on harnesses for work at height

      8. BOOK STYLE LABELS

Book style labels contain product information and make inspection easier for workers. These labels promote quick inspection, compliance and safety.

    • Breathable harnesses for working at heights

      9. BREATHABLE LININGS

Padding with breathable linings help wick moisture away from the body to keep it dry and comfortable in heat or cold.

    • Comfortable harness cushion 3m

      10. PADDING

Padded shoulder, leg and hip pads reduce pressure and provide comfort for the worker during long hours of use. In the event of a fall, they absorb impact and help redistribute weight.

    • Impact indicator harness 3m

      11. IMPACT INDICATORS

Impact indicators immediately provide notice that the worker and the harness have been in a fall. This function promotes safety and proper inspection.

    • how to attach the harness straps

      12. STITCHING

High strength quality threads and specifically designed stitch patterns provide maximum strength and durability.

Questions and answers about fall arrest harnesses

    Contact us

Here we answer some of your frequently asked questions, but if you have any other questions, please let us know and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

    • What is the established period of time for the inspection?
Supplied with all fall arrest harnesses from 3M™ you will find an information leaflet with detailed information on the frequency of the inspection. The harness should be inspected by user before every use, and by a competent person at least every 12 months, though this inspection frequency can be increased by local recommendations, or when harnesses are used in intensive or harsh environments.
    • If the product is textile (e.g. harness, lanyard, etc.) or contains a textile element (e.g. rope, webbing, etc.), provided the product passes annual inspections by a competent person, it is recommended by 3M that the item be removed from service 10 years after its manufacturing date. In some cases where the product is serviceable and contains a textile element, it may be possible to replace the textile element to increase the usable life of the product over 10 years.
    • A full body fall arrest harness normally includes a rear D-ring for fall arrest (fall arrest points are marked with an "A"); some models also include a front fall arrest attachment point. Both front and rear fall arrest attachment points can be used for fall arrest.
    • If the vertical ladder system is permanently fixed at the top and bottom, it will be necessary to use a full body fall arrest harness with a front D ring. If the vertical system is temporary (usually rope), it may be possible to attach the fall arrest carriage to the front or back ring of a full body fall arrest harness.
    • We suggest webbing products with a strong coating. The resistant coated webbing is made of polyurethane and will make cleaning easier. 3M® offers you several DBI-SALA® harnesses and lanyards that incorporate the specialised webbing with resistant cover.
    • A harness should be worn over winter clothing. It is more visible on inspections and there is less chance of clothing interfering with buckles and self-locking hooks. Also, when the harness is over the clothes, if a fall occurs the harness will be free to move upward, without interfering with clothes.
    • A full body fall arrest harness usually includes a rear D-ring for fall arrest (fall arrest points are marked with an "A"); some models also include a front fall arrest attachment point. The front or rear fall arrest attachment point can be used, although rear attachment is usually preferred, so the cable is out of the way of the user whilst working.
