WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) was first established in 1984 following the Finniston Report, which highlighted the national need for a broad talent pool of scientists and engineers.

With The Princess Royal as its patron, the campaign now has some 150 member organisations and around 16,000 individual members and subscribers.

Its aim is to encourage more females to value and pursue the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths through school and university and into related careers. And it welcomes support from men and women at all stages of their careers to promote STEM from ‘the classroom to the boardroom’.

3M Corporate Communications manager, John Klee, commented: “As a company, 3M believes that diversity is an essential element of our unique culture of creativity, collaboration and innovation.

“We have long shared WISE’s aim to encourage girls and young women to study STEM subjects, so we’re pleased that we can show our support through this membership.”

Membership of WISE brings a range of benefits including conferences, regional hubs and other networking activities, as well as training and consultancy services.

Among future activities planned by 3M to foster young interest in the STEM subjects is a visit to the Bracknell site in Berkshire during British Science Week in March by 150 girls and their parents from local secondary schools.

The event is aimed at influencing the girls’ subject choices by showcasing the dynamic and fulfilling careers enjoyed by the company’s female scientists and engineers.
