The 3M™ Intelligent Control Inhaler has won the top award in a new category at this year’s annual CPhI Pharma Awards.

The awards, established in 2004, are among the most prestigious within the pharmaceutical industry and celebrate thinkers and creators who break new ground.

This year was the first time that a new category was created to acknowledge the highest achievements in drug delivery systems – the Excellence in Pharma: Drug Delivery Devices Award – with the 3M smart inhaler being its inaugural winner.

The inhaler was launched earlier this year as a game-changer within the industry and is an intuitive, fully-integrated device delivering accurate doses of medication to patients. It is currently in clinical trials evaluation and will be approved for commercial sale in partnership with a pharmaceutical company.

It has on-screen instructions for use and gives feedback to the patient and healthcare provider via an app.

The inhaler was selected as the award winner for its unique features designed to reduce patient variability and errors and provide data on use to clinicians to improve the management of respiratory disease and outcomes for patients.

Tracy Black, 3M’s global business manager for Inhalation Drug Delivery and Conventional Drug Delivery, commented: “We were delighted that the Intelligent Control Inhaler has been singled out as the first recipient of this new award for drug delivery devices. It’s great recognition from the pharmaceutical industry that this inhaler is something really special.”

The award was presented during the CPhI Pharma Awards Gala in Barcelona, attended by more than 250 representatives from the pharmaceutical industry worldwide.
