3M Battery Enhancement Material is designed specifically to keep xEV batteries within their optimum temperature ranges, especially in unpredictable environments. This engineered material for xEV batteries helps reduce draw from battery power required for cooling and heating systems. It can help prevent outside temperatures from heating the battery by as much as 33%, and it helps warm the battery as much as 20% faster in colder temperatures. The result: greater range, faster charging times and extended xEV battery life.
Excessive temperatures can impair xEV battery performance and permanently shorten battery life. In cold temperatures, 3M Battery Enhancement Material delivers a 30-50% reduction in battery warmup time at -6.7°C to 15°C (20°F to 59°F) and keeps the battery warmer longer. This limits the power draw from onboard heating units, which can increase driving range.
In warm temperatures 3M Battery Enhancement Material helps the battery operate within its optimal range, which can help maintain battery storage capacity and performance over the lifetime of the electric vehicle.
By keeping the battery operating within its optimal temperature range longer, 3M Battery Enhancement Material can add from 20-40% range depending on battery design, environmental and interior vehicle temperatures, and consumer driving habits. It can also help maximize return of current during regenerative braking and meets UL 94 V-0 flame resistance.
Unlike fiberglass, coated polystyrene, aerogels or other insulators, 3M Battery Enhancement Material is conformable and highly compressible to fill the variable gaps between the battery pack and the battery pack lid. It is ideal where space is at a premium – most commonly beneath the cooling plate – and allows for thermal insulation in small, thin spaces where thermal materials could not previously be used.
It is easily customizable to specific battery pack dimensions and is available slit, laminated, die-cut and edge-sealed to individual customer specifications.
