Lifting the fog from their eyes

Our new coating for safety spectacles resists fogging for longer, meaning that workers aren’t tempted to remove them to wipe away condensation and risk exposing their eyes to hazards.

3M™ Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog Coating offers superior protection and resistance to scratches without compromising lens clarity so that safety spectacles or goggles perform better and need replacing less often.

Said technical application engineer Simon Field: "Unlike alternatives on the market, Scotchgard Anti-Fog Coated Eyewear has been shown to retain its anti-fog properties for a minimum of 25 washes, making it an economical choice."

The coating is marketed under the Scotchgard brand, a cornerstone of 3M science discovered by accident. 3M scientist Patsy Sherman was working on a new kind of rubber for jet aircraft fuel lines in the 1950s when some of the latex mixture splashed onto a pair of canvas tennis shoes.

She noticed that the spot stayed clean over time, resisting oil and water, while the rest of the canvas soiled and this was the inspiration for a product that has protected carpets, upholstered furniture, leather and other fabrics for more than 60 years.

The anti-fog coating is currently available on two 3M eyewear ranges: the 3M™ Solus™ Safety Spectacle Series 1000 that comes in a range of lens colours and comfort options and the 3M Goggle Gear Series 500 that features an adjustable strap and option to insert a prescription lens.
