The webinar shone the spotlight on the issue of compatibility between different items of personal protective equipment (PPE) and shared the results of Health and Safety Executive research.

Said Alan: “Even relatively simple tasks can involve someone needing to wear four different items of personal protective equipment on their head and face. If the individual pieces of equipment are not compatible, one can compromise the ability of another to protect the wearer.

“We know that while the product approval process manufacturers have to go through to put PPE on the market is effective in terms of individual items, it does not generally address the issue of compatibility.”

Alan explained how users can recognise incompatibility and outlined the steps health and safety managers can take to avoid this common pitfall. He also demonstrated how 3M’s product solutions solve some common compatibility problems.

Said Alan: “In some cases, we are able to test for compatibility and suggest combinations that are likely to work together. However, in many cases the employer has to make a judgement together with the individual wearing the products.”

The webinar also covered the legal aspects of PPE compatibility and participants were invited to ask questions throughout the presentation.

This free Safety Spotlight webinar was the first in a series planned for 2017. These are designed to share 3M’s knowledge and expertise on a variety of workplace issues, hazards and training methods with health and safety professionals across a range of industries.
