      Thanks to an innovative solution from Trelleborg Offshore using 3M Glass Bubbles, the Northern Cyprus Water Supply Project pipeline is now transporting 90 billion litres of fresh water from Turkey to Cyprus every year.

      The project was commissioned to deliver much needed drinking and irrigation water to the north of the island, where supplies are currently dwindling due to inadequate rainfall.

      As the pipeline crosses one of the deepest parts of the Mediterranean, where water pressure is high, an inventive solution was needed to transport the water from Anamur in Turkey to a dam built in Gecitkoy in Cyprus.

      Trelleborg Offshore engineers took up the challenge and designed a 107-kilometre (67-mile) long suspended pipeline held up by 266 Trelleborg Offshore Distributed Buoyancy Modules made at the company's manufacturing facility in Lancashire, UK.

      These allow the pipeline to stay afloat at a depth of 250 metres instead of being placed along the seabed, some 1,400 metres below the surface, where the effect of water pressure is much greater or on the surface which would affect shipping movements.

      Darren Hall, technical sales manager, 3M Advanced Materials Division, said: "The low density of the 3M Glass Bubbles used to manufacture the modules ensures that the pipeline achieves neutral buoyancy and retains its subsea position. This is the first project of its kind but, given the increasing shortage of fresh water in many parts of the world, could be replicated in other regions."
