Godiva2 is a human-powered submarine designed by a team of mechanical engineering undergraduates from Warwick University to compete against universities from all over the world in the 2016 European Submarine Races held in Portsmouth in July.

During its creation, the WarwickSub team got in touch with advanced materials experts from 3M to explore ways to incorporate the latest innovations into the submarine.

These included using 3M Glass Bubbles in the bio-based hull to ensure stability and the best underwater buoyancy as well as 3M fast-cure, waterproof acrylic adhesive to bond the structure’s composite materials.

In addition, the team used the 3M™ Dual Lock™ fastening system to attach the dead man’s switch to the side of the submarine as well as abrasive and surface cleaning products to achieve a highly polished finish.

“Although it was disappointing that the submarine didn’t win in the water, the students were thrilled to win a prestigious award for the design report that forms part of their final university assignment.”

The submarine will be on display in 3M’s Customer Innovation Centre in Bracknell in October.
