    • Yvonne Schreifels, whose youngest child is currently hospitalized, sees special hospital entertainment as a lifesaver for her family. She says it gives her a chance to be a family and do activities with the siblings that otherwise wouldn’t happen in a hospital setting. One example is the excitement her daughter experienced when 3M scientists visited and brought ingredients to make goo. The slimy substance is designed to bounce, be stretched and break with enough pressure. The experiment left the kids awestruck and giggling.

    • Elizabeth Dunlap, lean six sigma black belt with 3M Traffic Safety and Security, started the connection with 3M and the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a few years ago. Now, with a grant from 3Mgives, the group brings activities like the sticky goo to the hospital. This year 3M’s Visiting Wizards joined the event.

Elizabeth says her relationship with Children’s goes back to high school, adding that service was a huge part of her high school life. “It was instilled in me,” she says. “We’re fortunate enough to give back to people, whether it is their health or financially. Kids have always had a special place in my heart.”

“I love being in the hospital and making a difference for the kids. I learn a lot every time I go there and give back. Showing how courageous and strong those kids are, I don’t think I’d ever have the strength those kids have. I definitely get more back than I give.”

Kelli Novak went to the event in her role as 3Mgives coordinator, but visiting Children’s Hospital brought back a slew of memories. Just two short years ago, her son was diagnosed with a condition that required him to stay in the hospital. Now, Kelli has a chance to give back by helping kids in the hospital make projects.

This year was the first year the 3M Visiting Wizards attended the event. The kids watched with wonder as the Wizards performed science experiments, designed to create an interactive experience for the youngsters. Even some of the parents got involved. Jeff Payne started as a Visiting Wizard when his kids were in school. Now, he finds pleasure in giving back to other kids who might not have the opportunity to get this kind of hands-on science fun.

“I really believe this is something that 3M should be doing. I enjoy doing it and get out when I can. I think it is very important that we give back. 3M having a science encouragement program is critical for the students of today.”
