3M™ Structural Adhesive SA9816 is a two-part epoxy adhesive formulated for steel or aluminium hem flange bonding applications in the body-in-white shop. The adhesive helps minimize panel distortion and increases design flexibility in OEM automotive applications. Excellent for hem bonding of hoods, trunks and doors, it can eliminate the need for additional ovens in Body in White (BiW).
A Two Part Structural Adhesive for Greater Design Flexibility
Formulated for galvanized steel or aluminium hem flange bonding, 3M™ Structural Adhesive SA9816 is excellent for applications involving very high lubricant coating weights with good induction reactivity, which are important factors for fast lock up.
When properly cured during the e coat bake, the adhesive achieves structural bond strength to lubricated steel and aluminium. It is also compatible with dry film lubricants used on aluminium surfaces. It has a very long dwell time (up to 14 days) before e coat bake. Its low activation temperatures minimize panel distortion, and provide excellent off ratio and over bake tolerances. It also can be spot cured.
Since manufacturers can pre set automotive panel assemblies, 3M™ Structural Adhesive SA9816 can eliminate the need for body in white ovens and additional fixturing outside of the hemming cell. This can reduce the potential for panel distortion on aluminium hems.
An Adhesive for Enabling Lightweight Design
As automotive OEMs are using more and more lightweight materials such as aluminium and thin steel panels, the hemming process for hoods, trunks, and doors becomes more complex. The need for mixed material joints is growing, as well as improved vehicle stiffness and better driving characteristics without sacrificing reliable manufacturing processes.
3M™ Structural Adhesive SA9816 eliminates the expense of pre cure ovens associated with 1K solutions on aluminium parts, and helps significantly reduce quality defects during production. It can be pre cured with induction to prevent parts from moving during transport or during the e coat bath before final bake. This helps minimize aluminium panel distortion af
