Surface preparation

The surface of the material to be processed is machined. The goal is usually to prepare it for the next process, such as painting, bonding, etc. This process may involve chemical, mechanical (abrasive) treatment, anodisation, corona treatment, etc.

Painting and coating

Materials are coated to provide protection against corrosion or other factors (abrasion, UV, etc.) or to achieve the desired surface appearance.

  • Painting of vehicle parts

When using two colours to paint the truck body, exterior elements (bumpers, spoilers, etc.) or interior panels, or having to separate areas that are not to be painted, masking tape is a must.

    Why 3M?

3M paper masking tapes are easy to apply from the roll, adhere well to the surface, provide a clean line, and do not leak. When being removed, they do not break, fray or leave traces of adhesive. 3M paper masking tapes are suitable for paint baking at temperatures of up to 160 degrees Celsius (501E tape). Vinyl tape 471 (471+) is ideal for masking complicated shapes. To obtain a clear, precise cut-off line when baking paints in high temperatures of up to 150 degrees Celsius, we recommend using the 4737 Vinyl Tape. With the help of our converters, we can provide tape cut to shape.

  • Protect your paint booth walls and floors while reducing the amount of airborne contaminants that could damage the paint coat. Apply the products on walls and floors using the dispensers to reduce paint booth maintenance time.

    Why 3M?

Protective material for booth and surface protection limits the amount of dirt, dust and spatter, while making booth maintenance faster and easier, and lowering the costs of service work as a result of the supplied application tools. This protection material can be used as temporary surface protection both inside and outside the booth. The material is available in various widths. The protection material is also available in grey for use on the floor.

  • The protective material is perfect for protecting surfaces and keeping them clean. It is used mainly for floors instead of paper or cardboard, which require masking tape (to fix it to the floor or substrate) and which can become a tripping hazard.

    Why 3M?

3M™ Dirt Trap™ Protection Material for booth and surface protection limits the amount of dirt, dust and spatter, while making its replacement faster and easier by using a self-adhesive system, and lowering the costs of service work as a result of the supplied application tools. This protection material can be used as temporary surface protection both inside and outside the booth, for example to protect circulation routes, vehicle gangways, and elements temporarily exposed to contamination and dirt. The material is available in various widths. The protection material is also available in grey for use on the floor.

  • Preparation of the substrate before painting often requires the use of filler. This two-component product is mixed, spread and sanded. Any filler should be mixed 50: 1 (it is, however, difficult to obtain such proportions), and when the proportions are wrong, it is difficult to sand.

    Why 3M?

    • 3M™ DMS Dynamic Mixing System is a proprietary 3M™ technology designed to reduce waste, reduce the risk of pinholes when applied on to the repair area, and increase work productivity and speed. Due to mixing nozzle and applicator technology, which consists of a cartridge with filler and hardener, the filler is mixed in perfect proportions without air access.
    • The 50:1 mixing ratio should be precisely maintained: Make sure that the product cures well, which facilitates its sanding and reduces the amount of touch-ups caused by improper mixing.
    • Higher efficiency: Pull the trigger and go – no preparation, no manual mixing, no cleaning.
    • Fewer defects: The manual mixing process is eliminated.
    • 3M™ DMS fillers come in three types, adapted to the needs of various applications, in 276 ml cartridges.
    • Mixing, spreading and sanding becomes easier.
    • Comprehensive range.
    • 3M™ DMS is a proprietary 3M technology designed to reduce waste and pinholes, and to increase efficiency.

  • Paint is applied to the truck body (interior and exterior) to provide a protective coating against corrosion.
The quality of ED paint plays a key role in the entire painting process. Defects in the ED coating will be visible in any layers that follow; the causes of defects should be removed.

    Why 3M?

    • Enhanced contaminant holding capacity for fewer filter change outs.
    • Compatible with a wide range of applications and operating conditions.
    • Grooved cartridge with extended surface area promotes fuller utilisation of the depth-matrix and promotes long filter life.
    • Less frequent filter replacement, less waste.
    • Higher efficiency, less corrective work caused by contamination, minimised downtime.

  • The water used for the last rinse is used at the painting stage. UF is used to maintain the appropriate solid content, delivering the highest quality water thanks to recirculation. Filtration systems require protection against particles that clog UF membranes. 3M filters are used to extend the life of costly UF membranes.

  • Personal protective equipment for painting

Spray painting is a technique that involves device-assisted atomising of coating (paint, ink, coat, etc.) on a surface. The most popular types of equipment use compressed gas, usually air, to atomise and direct the paint particles.

    Why 3M?

Respiratory protection systems with compressed air units provide effective respiratory protection and thermal comfort for workers, increasing their efficiency. 3M paint coveralls include an air-permeable, breathable SMS layer, and provide anti-static protection.
3M fall protection harnesses offer maximum comfort, free movement and ease of use.

Assembly/bonding

Following one of the previous processes, substrates/elements are bonded. The joint may be mechanical (rivets, screws), but also welded, glued, bonded, heat-treated, etc.

  • Vehicle noise reduction (BSR)

Vehicle noise reduction to ensure passenger comfort is currently one of the main priorities for manufacturers. Unwanted noise can be dampened and sound waves suppressed. Adhesives and tapes are, either indirectly or directly, one of the best ways to solve the problem.

    Why 3M?

Vibration damping tapes for metal surfaces or squeak reduction tapes use special acrylic adhesive formula, characterised by high effectiveness of vibration damping. Black flock tape or flexible non-woven tape delivers effective dampening of noise created as a result of the tapping of movable plastic elements (or other objects) inside the cockpit. Single sided UHMW-PE tapes provide excellent surface protection and elimination of squeaks where two elements rub against one another.

  • Door, floor and side panels are often composed of many parts, the assembly of which requires bonding. These processes involve both lamination of layers, as well as bonding of accessories and fitting of components with the necessary parts.

    Why 3M?

3M thin double-sided adhesive tapes and adhesive film tapes are a solution for bonding foam, non-woven or other soft layers in the panel structure. 300LSE adhesive tapes are dedicated for effective bonding of difficult surfaces (e.g. LSE plastics or various foams). Low VOC tapes meet the requirements of strict regulations regarding the emissivity of materials. Water-based adhesives for larger surfaces are easy to spray, efficient, and cost-effective. Solvent-based aerosol adhesives are fast-acting and very handy for auxiliary work and repairs. Smaller elements and accessories can be bonded with hot-melt or PUR adhesives. The hot-melt adhesive range includes specialty solutions for bonding LSE plastics or an adhesive with a very long open time.

  • The headliner has many functions: it conceals wires, dampens sounds, and gives the interior the desired appearance. It is usually a multi-layer structure, where fabrics and foam are laminated from the outside to the support plate (a lightweight composite), while wire harnesses, hooks, and reinforcements are fastened to its inner side.

    Why 3M?

The surface of the headliner panel is usually a difficult base for bonding (unevenness, use of LSE materials). 3M (hot melt and PUR) adhesives can meet the high requirements for effective adhesion to such material, for example for mounting hooks, fasteners, and reinforcements. 3M specialty tape 8777 can be used when bonding wire harnesses with particularly difficult materials. The Dual Lock™ Fasteners system is a widely accepted, convenient and effective way of attaching the headliner to the roof.

  • The truck seat consists of upholstery, many layers of foams, sensors, and mats that must be bonded. The front seat frame is a complex movable structure with accessories which may also be bonded. Painted frame structures may require protection.

    Why 3M?

To bond foam components, water-based adhesives or aerosol adhesives may be used. An easy, convenient and fast method is the use of thin adhesive tape and tape films, especially when mounting mats and sensors in the seat. 300LSE adhesive tapes are dedicated for effective bonding of difficult surfaces (e.g. LSE plastics or various foams). Low VOC tapes meet the requirements of strict regulations regarding the emissivity of materials. Tape 9088-200 may serve as a temporary holder while the covering is being sewn. Single-sided UHMW-PE tapes placed in the critical areas of the frame will protect the paint from wearing as a result of interaction with moving parts.

  • Some soft elements of the interior of the vehicle (e.g. headrests) are produced by inserting foam into a previously sewn covering. The seams must be tight so that the pressurised foam does not flow out.

    Why 3M?

To bond foam components, water-based adhesives or aerosol adhesives may be used.

  • The dashboard, centre console, armrests, etc. can be very complex structures consisting of many elements. One of the most effective methods of component assembly is bonding using both double-sided tapes and adhesives.

    Why 3M?

For low-energy materials, 3M has developed suitable structural adhesives including DP8005. If you are bonding high-energy/painted surfaces and a short bonding time is needed, use the DP8805 adhesive. For less critical applications (reinforcement, spacers, hooks), the very fast-acting hot melt adhesives will be the most convenient. Small decorative elements, flat finishing elements, and foam seals are best attached with thin double-sided tapes/adhesive films due to the convenience and speed of use.

  • At the stage of assembly of a new truck model, it is possible that defects can occur. Gaps, looseness, lack of rigidity etc. may occur which can affect the aesthetics and functionality of the components, and often the only method of rectification is bonding.

    Why 3M?

For components made of low-energy materials, 3M has developed suitable structural adhesives DP8005. If you are bonding high-energy/painted surfaces and a short bonding time is needed, use the DP8805 adhesive. For many applications, the very fast-acting hot melt adhesives will be the most convenient, offering the possibility of pouring and space filling. When plastic parts are exposed to high temperatures they can become deformed, aluminium tapes should be applied to reflect the heat.

  • Some components in the vehicle's structure require to be bonded. Bonding is used, for example, in the production of the body of the truck, but it can also be useful in many smaller parts.

    Why 3M?

When bonding small metal parts where a rigid, very strong and high temperature-resistant application is required, adhesive 2214 is an ideal solution. Durable and reliable connections of metal elements (sheet metal, supports, including KTL painted) are delivered by adhesive DP490, which also offers ease of use. For low-energy materials, specialty structural adhesive DP8005 should be used; and if you are bonding high-energy/painted surfaces and a short bonding time is needed, use the DP8805 or DP8405 adhesive.

  • Welding of joints (of metallic parts or components) by heating the surfaces to melting temperatures and joining them by compression etc.

    Why 3M?

The 3M 9100XXi filter enables better colour recognition, allowing the welder to work more precisely and faster. This translates to improved efficiency of the welder and limits the number of adjustments and waste. The Adflo system with Speedglas Welding Helmet provides effective and comfortable respiratory protection for welders. The system reduces the number of PPE pieces per worker from 5 to 1, which makes it easier for employers to manage the equipment. The range of 3M hearing protection products includes various noise-reducing earplugs.

Finishing

In the next step, the nearly finished product is sealed, labelled, customised, polished, and, if there are any production defects, corrected.

  • Vehicle labelling/marking

Most truck parts and components require permanent and clear marking to enable full identification of the element. The most efficient and effective way is to use a label with the appropriate print.

    Why 3M?

3M suggests a Durable Print layer. If you need to protect a component against unauthorised disassembly, use tamper evident labels, which will show if an attempt has been made to remove them.
