But it had to be done using existing infrastructure.

The goal was accomplished with a new kind of cable called 3M Aluminium Conductor Composite Reinforced, or ACCR.

3M ACCR derives its strength and durability from its core, which is made of aluminium oxide fibres embedded in high-purity aluminium.

This means the power company can send a lot more electricity without bigger or more numerous lines.

"The installation of two double-circuit 110kV lines using lightweight 3M ACCR will provide a cost-effective long-term solution with minimal disruptive impact on the communities."
