In 1938 the world’s first ‘pavement marking’ with reflective material was applied on a road in Minnesota and the first night demonstration scheduled. When the MnDOT/3M team went to view the project, it had delaminated from the road. However, the failed pavement marking had re-attached itself to a fence post and the idea of reflective sheeting was born.

On September 1st, 1939 the first traffic signs with 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material were erected on the highway in Minnesota and a global brand and synonym for visibility was born.
