Crossrail is one of the largest infrastructure projects of its kind in Europe, involving the construction of 42 km of tunnels complete with emergency aluminium walkway.
Leading architectural metalwork company CMF was tasked with the design, fabrication and installation of 42 kms of emergency aluminium walkway for the tunnels and turned to 3M to provide a durable, anti-slip solution for the edging.
3M™ Safety-Walk™ Anti-Slip Tape was selected for its consistent high performance, cost effectiveness and ease of application on site. It also met London Underground’s strict safety standards for fire, toxicity and smoke.
Said Gary Blunden, project director for CMF: “This is a substantial project and we needed to be certain that the anti-slip element of the aluminium walkway was both extremely durable as well as easy to apply.
“We chose the Safety-Walk product because of 3M’s reputation as the best anti-slip tape manufacturer in the business, and with the demands placed on us by Crossrail, we couldn’t afford to compromise.”
CMF had originally considered a paint-on anti-slip option, but this would have involved sending each section of the walkway to a separate painting facility for treatment.
The Crossrail project is also involving the building of 10 new stations. When it’s complete, the network will span from Reading and Heathrow in the West, through central London and to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East.
