If the work at height cannot be avoided, the next consideration must be the protection of the workforce by the prevension of falls. Collective fall prevension e.g edge guarding, scaffolding, take presidence over personal controls but there are many situations where Personal Fall Protection is an appropriate control.
At 3M, we manufacture an expansive and trustworthy range of PPE equipment and fall protection devices for working at heights: anchorages, harnesses, connectors, rescue and evacuation equipment, horizontal and vertical lifelines and equipment for working in confined spaces.
We can help you identify the hazards, assess the associated risks and recommend appropriate controls for your particular projects and industry. As each type of working at height may require a specific level of training, we can also offer training for your workers. We are determined to exceed your expectations. Expert professionals in working at heights and fall protection.
Working at heights can be defined as work taking place where, if precautions were not taken, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury: For example, work on roofs, wind turbines, pylon poles, scaffolding, aerial work platforms, roof tops, ladders, building sites, logistical centres or modes of transport...
However, we must also include in this definition work carried out at or below ground level or in confined spaceswhere a fall risk exists. Examples include : drains, tunnels, mines, tanks, excavations etc.
Do you know the consequences of falls from height?
Failure to identify the Hazards, assess the Risks and identify and implement effective fall protection controls can have serious consequences which include personal injury and prosecution.

Choosing the right equipment is crucial in order to protect worker safety, especially when working at heights. A typical personal fall arrest system (PFAS) includes three components, usually described as the ABC’s of fall protection: A for Anchorage, B for Body support and C for Connectors.
However, we must not forget about another necessary components of any fall protection programme: the descent, rescue and recovery of the worker in the event they suffer a fall.
Anchor devices secure the rest of the Fall Protection System to a suitable structure. They are available in many types and designs for different applications and may be fixed or portable.
The harness provides a connection point on the worker for the personal fall protection system. In the event of a fall, the harness distributes fall forces over the upper thighs, pelvis, chest and shoulders...
Descent and rescue devices are used to lift or lower a worker who has suffered a fall and is left suspended or has been injured, or to retrieve them from a confined space...
Vertical Permanent Lifelines provide effective fall arrest on ladders and vertical structures. Horizontal systems may be designed to either prevent or arrest a fall from roofs and platforms.
Accessories and fall protection for tools make the work environment safer as they reduce the risk of accidents caused by falling objects…

In order to address safety needs in this growing industry, we have created protection solutions for work in wind energy, construction and maintenance in wind turbines including rescue and evacuation equipment.
For example, specialised harnesses for this industry- 3M™ DBI-SALA® ExoFit NEX™ and 3M™ DBI-SALA® EZ Stop™ lanyards, as well as rescue and escape systems such as the 3M™ DBI-SALA® Rollgliss™ R550 Rescue and Descent Device.
We’ve developed dozens of specialised products, from DBI-SALA® Horizontal Systems for rail-car loading, to custom access 3M™ DBI-SALA® FlexiGuard™ solutions for truck servicing.
We’ve even designed a patented fall arrest rated 3M™ DBI-SALA® Mobi-Lok™ Self-Contained Vacuum Anchor System for aviation workers.
We pioneered “retractable” lifeline technology in the 1940s, “sealed retractable” technology specifically for the oil and gas fields, and products tested to -40°C to meet the IP69k seal rating.
In addition, we developed specialised equipment and training for a wide array of emergency escape devices.
We proactively innovate equipment specifically for these industries, such as our 3M™ DBI-SALA® Lad-Saf™ and 3M™ Protecta® Cabloc™ permanent vertical lifeline systems.
Our welding and hot works products feature Kevlar®/Nomex® fibres for your safety and peace of mind. In addition, we offer a number of innovative rescue and descent systems and kits, crucial to your rescue plan...
No two construction sites are the same. That complexity is why we work closely with contractors to help us fine-tune our design on key products such as the 3M™ DBI-SALA® Nano-Lok™ Edge Self-Retracting Lifeline— used at sites where sharp edges are hazardous and foot level tie-off is needed.
We listened to steel erectors and created shoulder caps that protect the webbing on our latest harnesses…
Every day, thousands of manufacturing and facility workers around the world don their safety gear and head out to do their job.
Whether you’re processing, milling, finishing, inspecting or doing routine maintenance, 3M™ Fall Protection has you covered.
Our speciality, Confined Space Equipment, Self-Retracting Lifelines, Full-Body Harnesses, Lanyards, Ladder Safety Systems etc...
We developed specialised harnesses to address miners’ specific needs as well as 3M™ DBI-SALA® FlexiGuard™ Solutions to protect them while doing maintenance on oversized mining industry trucks.
Additionally, our industry-leading mining anchors maximise versatility and ease-of-use for workers.
Special equipment is needed to work in industries in which the products can degrade protection materials or even equipment that protects the worker from falling either over the edge or into chemical containers which could be harmful to their health.
This is why 3M™ provides you with specific equipment for these situations.
The European Commission has published a number of standards intended to control the design and use of rescue and personal protection equipment against falls from height. These standards must be adhered to, and are applicable in all the member states. Furthermore, 3M can provide equipment certified under various international regulatory standards.
