3M has a long successful history in the use of structural adhesives for bonding metal to composite. Find out more.
Our world class surface preparation, structural adhesive bond primers, films and erosion protection films are approved and trusted by aircraft OEMs worldwide for toughness, durability and resistance to temperature, minor impacts and erosion in some of the harshest environments. Find out more about 3M fan blade/cold-side engine applications.
The 3M sol-gel products provide surface treatment and adhesion enhancement performance on metal substrates on par with conventional chemical etch and anodize systems. Enables “on-wing” surface preparation for metal bond applications for challenging substrates such as aluminum, titanium, nickel and stainless steel. Complimentary to 3M corrosion inhibiting bond primers such as EW-5005 and EC-3917.
Recommended Products:
3M corrosion inhibiting bond primers ensure long term durability for the bonded substrates. These products are available in conventional solvent based chromated versions as well as water based chromated and non-chromated versions. They are compatible with both conventional etch and anodize surface preparations as well as grit blast – sol gel.
Recommended Products:
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives Primer EC-3924B
3M structural adhesive films are designed for high pre-bond humidity performance, fracture toughness and peel strength on metals and composites, with flexible cure cycles. Additionally, these films are used to bond 3M Cocure films to fan blades.
Recommended Products:
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Film AF 191
3M composite surfacing films portfolio encompasses a family of thermosetting modified epoxy adhesives in film form. The products provide long-term durability and meet specific challenges for metal and composite solid panel and honeycomb sandwich construction, where high fracture toughness and peel strength are required.
Recommended Products:
3M Cocure films provide essential protection for composite fan blades. Able to be co-cured with composite parts or bonded to the surface of composite parts, these films protect composite fan blades from erosion and abrasion damage aft of a metal leading edge.
Recommended Products:
3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8730NA
3M urethane repair pastes are used to quickly repair polyurethane erosion films on parts, eliminating the need to remove and replace the film. These two-part pastes cure to erosion-resistant urethane elastomers and provide long-lasting protection from further damage.
Recommended Products:
3M epoxy matrix resins enable conversion of metal parts to composites for lightweighting and integrate easily into resin transfer moulding processes.
Appropriate mixing of epoxy and hardener is critical to both the processing and performance of your finished composite part. 3M's Resin Calculator makes calculating the appropriate mix ratio simple. You will need the Certificates of Analyses that shipped with the resin and the hardener where you will find the Epoxy Equivalent Weight (EEW) for each component. Enter the two numbers in the appropriate boxes (Box 1 and Box 4 for the 3M Matrix Resin and Hardener respectively). In Box 2, enter your desired units of 3M Matrix Resin. The calculator will function whether you prefer to mix by volume or by weight. The Charge Ratio in Box 3 can be recommended by 3M Technical Support Personnel by Contact us. The basic starting point for a Charge Ratio is 1.00. Resin performance can occasionally be improved with a slight under charge (0.95) or a slight over charge (1.05).
