3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes was the smart choice when refurbishing the reception desk of a school committed to both traditional and contemporary education, bringing a modern twist to classic design.
Situated in the picturesque market town of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, the Minster School has 1600 students aged 7 to 18 years of age, drawn from local villages as well as Southwell itself. It’s a popular and highly respected educational establishment, with students, teachers and families working together to support both academic success and personal development. The main reception desk is an important part of the school, providing the first point of contact for students, parents and visitors. However, it was looking dated and tired, with ageing laminated wood panels at odds with the rest of the building.
Aura Graphics was given the job of refurbishing the reception desk, to create a highly professional yet welcoming look on a tight budget. Previous experience told the company that 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes would be ideal for this, and with over 1000 patterns to choose from, the design options were virtually limitless.
They knew that DI-NOC Architectural Finishes can be applied almost anywhere, from walls and ceilings to fittings, furniture and doors, so fitting them to the reception desk would pose no problems at all. DI-NOC finishes are quick to install, so the work could easily be undertaken overnight or at the weekend, with no disruption to the school day.
No specialist machinery or chemicals were needed, making the job less labour-intensive than other options, as well as preventing children from encountering these potential hazards. With a sophisticated high-end look that will last up to 12 years, DI-NOC finishes are highly durable too. They’re up to ten times more wear-resistant than paint and wood, with the same performance characteristics as good quality high pressure laminate (HPL)*.
They’re easily patch repaired, so there’s no need to replace the entire fixture if they’re scuffed or damaged. This was a major consideration for the school, as the reception area has constant traffic throughout the day. The school was particularly interested to hear that DI-NOC finishes are a low-maintenance, low-weight alternative to woods, metals, resins and plastics. This meant it was possible to maintain the school’s professional look at a fraction of the cost of installing heavy duty materials. Because there’s no need to rip out old features, they’re a more sustainable solution and may help the building qualify for LEED certification credits, which was also a key consideration.
Impressed with the many advantages that DI-NOC finishes offered, the school worked with the Aura Graphics team to choose a design that precisely met their needs. A dark grey textile option was combined with a grey solid finish, delivering a classical aesthetic with a modern twist that the school was delighted with. The ease and speed of installation was such that the project did not disrupt the smooth running of school, as well as being delivered well within budget. Aura Graphics are pleased to report that Minster School is delighted with the results of the refurbishment.
