Inspiration comes from everywhere. Material solutions come from 3M.
This is one of the most exciting times in the history of the automotive industry. Technology, safety and mobility are converging to power the future. At 3M, we work with leading OEMs, Tiers and display makers to help make electronics lighter, safer, more durable and more efficient in the vehicle.
We're building on decades of experience and investing in the future to help equip vehicles with the best in information displays, driver monitoring, head-up displays, vehicle connectivity and user experience. Browse 3M solutions for automotive HMI applications below.
Place sensors where you need for optimal driver monitoring performance while still delivering a flawless driver experience. With 3M™ Sensor Camouflage Films, you can place infrared sensors where they work best while hiding them completely from the driver’s view.
Achieve best-in-class brightness, colour and design flexibility with 3M Head-Up Display solutions. Our array of optical films provides optimal visibility in most lighting conditions and cover the right area so you can improve thermal management, reduce energy consumption and provide a wider viewing angle.
Bring together breathtaking design, enhanced safety, efficiency, functionality and reliability. 3M delivers solutions that solve your toughest automotive display design challenges: light manipulation and management, bonding, EMI prevention, thermal management and impact absorption.
Make more than a rearview mirror. Make a full-width, fully integrated information display. 3M™ Reflective Polarizing Mirror films let you design eMirror applications with seamless transition between an electrified backlit state and the passive reflective state, giving you higher clarity and visibility in a broad spectrum of conditions.
Craft a complete and immersive cabin environment. Solutions for solar management, information displays and driver monitoring are designed to deliver a comfortable and optimized ergonomic experience.
Since the introduction of the first modern (i.e., digital) vehicle displays, designers and manufacturers have made significant advances in technologies that improve image quality and enhance unit durability. Typically, these advances have been targeted and discrete. For example, to increase brightness, high efficiency light control films were deployed; to reduce nighttime windshield glare, a light-directing louver film was incorporated into the liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight. While this targeted approach to vehicle display concerns has advanced performance—in many cases impressively—it may have reached the limits of its effectiveness.
For displays based on the most common head-up display (HUD) architecture, shortcomings are often interrelated. As such, they require a holistic or cabin human machine interface (HMI) ecosystem approach that recognizes this interplay and, where possible, addresses multiple issues simultaneously. Several new films, in concert with existing film technologies, show how a cabin ecosystem strategy can be implemented.
